Protecting Assateague’s Wild Horses Through Research, Education & Advocacy

Assateague Horse Safety (AHS) is a grassroots, public-facing initiative focused on the safety and well-being of Assateague Island’s wild horses.

At Our Core

AHS was created in response to growing public concern about preventable threats facing the horses – from vehicle collisions and unsafe visitor behavior to feeding, harassment, campground conflicts, pets, and other human-wildlife interactions.

Concern for these horses extends far beyond any one organization, Facebook group, petition, proposal, or individual. Across the community, advocates, researchers, photographers, volunteers, organizations, and concerned citizens are already working in different ways to protect the horses and push for meaningful change.

Get Involved

You care about Assateague’s wild horses, and you want to help. But knowing where to begin—and where your time can make the greatest difference—isn’t always easy. That’s exactly why Assateague Horse Safety exists.

Stewardship

We believe protecting Assateague’s wild horses is a shared responsibility. Good stewardship means respecting their wild nature, following the rules designed to protect them, reducing human-created risks, and caring for the island in ways that allow the horses and other wildlife to thrive.

Purpose

To provide a trusted place where people can understand what is happening, find reliable information, share concerns and evidence, connect with ongoing efforts, and become better stewards of Assateague’s wild horses.

Mission

Research. Educate. Advocate. We gather and verify information, educate the public, connect concerned citizens with credible resources and ongoing efforts, and support informed, intentional advocacy and responsible stewardship of Assateague’s wild horses.

Goal

To turn public concern into coordinated, factual, effective action that reduces preventable harm and strengthens long-term safety, accountability, education, and stewardship for Assateague’s wild horses.
