S.U.S.I.

COMING SOON: S.U.S.I.

Situational Understanding for Safety & Intelligence

A horse-safety tracking and reporting platform in development by Assateague Horse Safety.

SUSI is designed so anyone can report what they observe – visitors, residents, photographers, volunteers, horse advocates, and others who encounter Assateague’s wild horses.

Reports will help build a clearer picture of what is happening with the horses and the environment around them.

SUSI’s data will:

  • Track horse sightings and activity patterns
  • Identify potential high-risk roadway and horse-strike zones
  • Alert possible injuries
  • Flag unusual or concerning horse behavior
  • Report separated foals or other horses that may need closer observation
  • Document unsafe or inappropriate human-horse interactions
  • Recognize recurring locations and emerging safety concerns
  • Turn individual observations into meaningful data that can support research, education, advocacy, and evidence-based safety recommendations

The data will be reviewed by AHS and used to identify patterns, problem areas, and recurring risks that can support specific safety recommendations. We can then take those findings to the appropriate agencies, researchers, and professionals to advocate for things like roadway changes, enforcement, signage, education, or other targeted protections.

In Memoriam

The strength of SUSI will come from many individual observations contributing to a much bigger picture.

Sensitive information will be protected, including information that could place individual horses at greater risk.

Named in memory of Susi Solé, SUSI is being built to help turn public awareness into useful, actionable horse-safety information.

Stay tuned for the launch date.
